Assessment and implementation of Agriculture and Life Science Universities’ first Gender Equality Plans in widening countries

Briefly about the project:

Gender inequality is a major constraint on the capacity and capability of research and education institutions in the field of Research and Development (R&D). The EU is tackling the problem by introducing mandatory Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) in R&D institutions, but different skills, capacities and expertise are hampering effective implementation. Gender inequality problems may be more pronounced in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, for which concrete action plans already exist. However, STEM fields are not homogeneous, with institutions in agriculture and life sciences facing very similar problems, but lacking sector-specific measures and plans to address the problem. Moreover, in the field of agriculture, many students come to EU research and education institutions from developing countries where there is a marked sector-specific gender imbalance.

Therefore, the AGRIGEP project has set the following objectives:

  1.     Assess the capacity of partner institutions implementing their Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) for the first time and identify strengths and weaknesses, risks and opportunities (assessment of universities in relation to the GEP)
  2. Increasing capacity through capacity building and promoting the reforms and structural changes necessary for the effective implementation of the JEPs (training materials for teachers, researchers, staff and students of the institutions).
  3. Conduct a sector-specific (agriculture and life sciences) assessment, review and update GEP strategies based on sector needs, and identify relevant sector-specific measures (GEPs tailored to research partner institutions).
  4. Providing the next generation of professionals with relevant knowledge on GEP issues related to agriculture and life sciences, with a special focus on international students (training materials adapted to the curricula of research partner institutions).
  5. Long-term institutional reforms, ensuring the long-term implementation and impact of institutional JEPs beyond the project lifetime through structural changes (sectoral JEP knowledge-sharing network).
  6. To mainstream gender equality in the education system of regional policy organisations and in the professional training of students; to increase the inclusiveness, reputation, attractiveness and research excellence of research partner institutions; to promote institutional transformation, to promote gender equality within the European Research Area.
